Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 Announced

Post  Terra on Wed Apr 21, 2010 11:51 am

Up until a few years ago, if you asked the average gamer what Bionic Commando was, they’d probably say it sounded like some old toy in similar vein to G.I Joe and not an old Video Game series by Capcom. Not that you could blame them however, the series was created in 1987 for Arcades and had been dormant since 1999. Even then in 1999, that was the first new game for 7 years. The series was not forgotten among more experienced gamers though, if only for the famous plot that involved the resurrection of Hitler and his equally famous demise in the game.

Since 2008 however, the series has been given new life with a remake of the NES installment as Bionic Commando Rearmed through Digital Download stores such as the XBLA, PSN and Steam, alongside a brand new, and for the first time, 3D installment on the Xbox 360, PS3 and the PC known simply as “Bionic Commando”. While Rearmed was very well received by gamers, the new game received only mixed reviews, although they did lean more towards positive than negative but still, the sales were poor for a Retail release.

They’d have almost certainly kept the success of Rearmed in mind, as now at their “Captivate” event, Capcom have announced that they are currently developing a sequel to Rearmed, simply known as Bionic Commando Rearmed 2. Unlike Rearmed, is a brand new game and Spencer is set to face new foe in the form of “General Sabio”, who according to the press release is “A New, Technologically Sophisticated Foe, on the Brink of Launching a Deadly Missile Attack”.

Since the original developer of Rearmed, GRIN, shutdown last year due to financial issues thanks to a pay dispute between Square-Enix over a Final Fantasy game codenamed Fortress, Capcom have announced that a new Development team comprised of former GRIN Employees known as “Fatshark”, will be developing the game instead.

In the Official Press Release (Quoted Below), Capcom revealed several new features behind the new title. First and most notably, is the ability to jump. This is a feature which has been famously absent in previous and may be a controversial addition among longtime fans of the series. The Press release also mentions that the game will include “New Weapons, Attacks and Functions for the all-purpose Bionic Arm” as well as “New Platforming Mechanics” (Whether this includes the Jump Ability or not is unclear right now) , and “New physics-based Puzzles” as well as the return of 2 player co-op.

What’s also promised are for the game are enhanced graphics, a better game camera, a new musical soundtrack “Inspired by NES-era sound effects” and cut scene art being developed by the studio ”Massive Black”, famous for their work on God Of War III most recently.

Rearmed 2 is set to be released for the Xbox 360 and PS3, with Capcom only giving a “Q1 2011” release date. Like the previous , this will also be released as a digital download through the XBLA and PSN, although so far there has been no mention of a PC release despite the previous Rearmed and 3D game being released for the PC.
