Nintendo Entertainment System

Post  Super Smash Bros. Fan on Mon Apr 12, 2010 9:26 pm

Yes folk, I bring you the discussion of Nintendo's very first major console, the Nintendo Entertainment System! Everyone should at least try one of there games.

I didn't really touch an NES until 2003 when I was at my dad's house. When I did, I was hooked on the system and it used to be a reason why I used to visit him semi-frequently. Ah the good ol' days.

What do you think of the NES and what memories do you have of the system?

The Super Mario Bros. trilogy is hands down the best ever. I remember owning a crap load of terrible games though.

It was my first system and I only had SMB3 because my parents were cheap ^^;;;;

And like I posted in the Genesis thread, SMB3 was frustrating. I could only make it to the Desert level most of the time unless I used the flute you got in the first world via the trick. I kind of want to get the GBA port and replay it just for the memories. (Save feature on the GBA port is also something that I really wished I had back then, so maybe I'll be able to get further in with the save feature to help me). Very Happy

Never owned one but I remember going to my friend's house just to play.
I remember playing Mega Man 1 and that game whooped my butt big time.

Also played Duck Hunt and Super Mario Bros. 1 2 & 3.
I really like The Little Mermaid too. I can finish that game in like 20 minutes.

Played a fair bit of Mario, all the hidden extras are kind of cliche now, but at the time discovering a short cut felt pretty amazing, the NES itself was pretty unique with the way those giant cartridges where inserted, arguably the most influential console of all time.

Mega Man VI was a good way to end the NES' era.
Easiest Mega Man game from the classic series and it was one of the last great games for the NES.

StarTropics! Surprised I think it's better than Zelda 1.

I tried playing the original Final Fantasy and the battles are so tedious! Anyone else tried to play any classic RPGs? I'm thinking of eventually giving FF another try and Dragon Quest/Warrior. Smile

I thought EarthBound Zero was really smooth on the Famicom. And it's even smoother on the GBA.

What can I say, I like these old school RPGs, although I don't like Final Fantasy that much. I was always interested in Dragon Quest though.

Hm, well I only gave it a quicky try. So I do plan on trying it again but more thoroughly this time (maybe the fact that I didn't buy any equipment before trying a battle made it that long...) And I played the GBC remake/port of DQIII and it was really good albeit very old school (simple story, no character personalities) and I know that's not everyone's cup of tea, although I think you, Ninten, will like it based on the fact that you did enjoy Etrian Odyssey and that had no characterization nor in-depth story either. :3

@Soar I wanted to give Dragon Quest III a try since it's regarded by many people as the holy grail of the franchise. And yup, I love old school RPGs, although EO is just too difficult for me to finish. Crying or Very sad

I do certainly like III a lot but than again, I've only played XI and some spin-offs. I know V and VI and VII are other favourites. I can't wait to try those (VII needs a port/remake, it's so hard to find. Sad It's funny that both of SE's big franchises have rare number 7s, although DQVII isn't anywhere as rare as FFVII, or at least sought after because I've never seen it going for over a 100$)

It may be your party. Do you have a Protector? I can't count the times my Protector saved my ass. The front and back blocks and the attention calling special moves are really handy with FOEs. There's also good old fashion grinding. It's a pain, but I usually need to grind a bit before End Stratum bosses (aka Black Balls of DOOM). Oh and if regular FOEs are kicking your ass, you need to avoid them. I learned that the hard way with Stalker in Floor 3. Sad

Lots of older games have translation patches out. That's how I played the Sailor Moon SNES RPG. (Yup, I'm a big Moon fan. :3 )
