Sega Genesis Discussion

Post  soaring_wings on Fri Apr 09, 2010 8:46 pm

Since we have the SNES thread, I thought I would make a Genesis thread as well since that was the system I had.

I'm curious, if someone had to choose between the two systems, why did they go with Genesis or SNES?

For myself, I touched on this before in another thread but I'll mention it again. Super Mario Bros. 3 on the NES frustrated me, so I decided to try another system the next generation. To my horror I found that, although Sonic wasn't as difficult as SMB3, it wasn't easy either. I never did beat Sonic and Tails....

I got an Sega Genesis out of a trash (Quite litterally) in February of 2009. Me and my grandmother went to her house and we tried it out. The game had Sonic the Hedgehog with it. Surprisingly, it worked. Now I'm planning on getting some games for it.

So far, it's excellent.

I'd chose the SNES because I like RPGs.
But Gunstar Heroes is my favorite run and gun game of all time.

Sad truth was that I didn't even know there was such a genre until pokemon. If I knew, I would have gone with the SNES as well. Razz

I really loved Sonic the Hedgehog. My thing at that time period was, also, Disney games like Jungle Book, Lion King, and Aladdin. You know, back when movies made into video games actually made for a pretty entertaining platform game.

Was lucky to have had both, but if I had to choose just one then I'd definitely go with megadrive, not bashing the SNES btw love that console too, but always spent the vast majoriity of my gaming time with megadrive, 1st party games where amazing, controls where great, especially the 6 button arcade stick, and although the add-ons flopped, I still enjoyed them personally, good memories.

Am I the only one who finds the Sonic games hard? or do I just suck that much?

Nope, you are not the only one. Like I wrote in my first post, I found the games hard. I could never beat them. Sonic 1 was really difficult. Sonic and Tails was a easier, but still no walk in the park. I found them easier than SMB3, but not by much. I think these games would have been much easier if there was a save option. I found the ports/remakes of Super Mario Bros. 1 and 2 much more fun and less frustrating with save files. I think Sonic would benefit as well, which is why I'm planning on picking up that Sonic collection recently released on the DS.

Admin, why? Sonic was fun. It would have been better with a save feature, but still. Sad
On a serious note, why did you find them not fun? (i'm just curious).

I guess it just never clicked with me. They have good graphics and music and I like the concept but the actual games are near no-fun for me. (The Adventure ones were decent.)

Good to know that I'm not the only one.

I can't beat Sonic 3.

OMG I had all of those games! (well...my cousin had Aladdin though)

They are all hard too...

Anyways, who can own a Mega Drive/Genesis without having Streets of rage 2 in their collection?

Oh and some forgotten gems from SEGA are Super Fantasy Zone (Europe and japan only), Landstalker, Chakan and Alisia Dragoon.

Ecco is so, so hard....and apparently scared everyone in the later levels too.

Btw, I have this!

Starlight, most of the games you mentioned, I also have. And I agree that they did not make those games easy! I still get stuck in Lion King from time-to-time. I'm very much an expert at Jungle Book though to the point that I may do a no death run sometime.

Nice, and Lion King isn't hard once you've gone and beaten it...I reckon I've Mastered it in a no death run...and yeah, Jungle Book is really easy once you know how to navigate all the levels ESPECIALLY King Louie's Jump fest level. <_<

With Lion King, Simba has a level where you HAVE to jump and grab onto something before a boulder comes and auto kills you when you are supposed to be running from the Hyenas....

The last boss is so hard because you don't technically fight him....if you do Simba's grab/throw attack Scar basically counters with a near fatal attack...BUT you need to do that once you make him flee to the top of Pride Rock...but it's so annoying as the move is inconsistent...it starts to not work when you do get there.

Speaking of hard games...I just remembered a non-Disney Hard Game for the Mega Drive....Bruce Lee Story! Man...that Demon Fight is so hard...I almost beat him as he was on a glitter of health that refused to move....and this was the final fight in the game! You can fight him to get another chance at a continue...but usually he'll kill you in 4 hits.
